ASHEVILE, NC – A new camp developed by The North Carolina Arboretum provides teens a unique opportunity for adventure and exploration while building valuable leadership skills. Leadership Adventure Camp is open to students in grades 9 through 12 (as of fall 2011 enrollment) and will take place June 13 through 17 this summer.
Campers will begin their weeklong experience at the Arboretum, where they will learn basic first aid and group leadership skills. The camp will then embark on a three-day, two-night excursion to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Hikes through the park will introduce campers to methods of identifying the diverse plant and animal life in the Southern Appalachians, and there will be an opportunity to work with park biologists to monitor salamander populations. Upon return from the trip, campers will lead a nature program for young children on behalf of the Arboretum, utilizing the skills and techniques developed throughout the week.
According to Jonathan Marchal, Youth Education Coordinator for The North Carolina Arboretum, the idea for the camp came from a desire of many campers to continue their camp experience at the Arboretum. “A Counselor in Training program began last summer, which invited high schoolers with previous experience working in camp settings to assist staff in leading activities for our day campers,” said Marchal. “This new camp enables those teens without previous leadership experience to learn how to lead groups, and may apply to serve as a Counselor in Training during other weeks throughout the summer.”
Leadership Adventure Camp is $375 for Arboretum members and $395 for the general public. The camp is open to rising ninth through twelfth grade students, and service hours may be recorded for school credit. The camp is open to both males and females, and experienced male and female staff—certified in CPR and First Aid—will be leading the camp. Tents, cooking supplies and other camping equipment will be provided by Diamond Brand Outdoors, and meals provided by Earth Fare. Both businesses are Community Partners of The North Carolina Arboretum.
For information about Leadership Adventure Camp, call (828) 665-2492 or visit www.ncarboretum.org. The central mission of The North Carolina Arboretum, an affiliate institution of the 17-campus University of North Carolina system, is to cultivate connections between people and plants.

ASHEVILLE, NC – Camp Unleashed presents retreats for people and their dogs to deepen their relationship through education and organized play in an experience designed to be transformational for both species.

In 2004, Annie Brody founded Camp Unleashed on the premise that dogs need a vacation from the human world — a place where they can be off leash, safe, and in a pack with other dogs in their own natural environment.

The first Camp Unleashed started with 10 people. Today camps are limited to 50 people to keep the dog pack and the human group personal and manageable. In 2010, Camp Unleashed expanded from the Berkshire Hills of western Massachusetts to include a camp in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Asheville, North Carolina. In 2011, Camp Unleashed added a new location on the West Coast with Camp Sequoia Lake in the Sierra Mountains, adjacent to Sequoia National Park.

Each Camp Unleashed session offers dogs and their people a 4-day weekend retreat organized to be fun, satisfying, relaxing, and educational.  The daily schedule is planned to keep the dogs active and participatory.  Presentations and workshops teach campers how to take the best care of their dog.  Sports and athletic activities led by experts engage the dogs and help campers understand how to maximize their dog’s abilities. Participation in activities is optional, and some campers may choose to simply relax by the lake with their dogs.

Over the years, feedback from campers has been extremely positive, and word of mouth has created the momentum for Camp Unleashed to grow. Campers say that being with their dog in nature in a pack, with the freedom to be off the leash is a transformative experience for both the dogs and their people. The Camp Unleashed philosophy, presenters, staff and programs build trust, deepen respect, improve skills, and reduce stress for both species.  Some people even say it’s the best vacation they’ve ever had!
